Cllr John Meredith to be new mayor
At the Annual Meeting of the Town Council held on 16th May Cllr John Meredith was elected to the position of Mayor for the ensuing year.
John Meredith has been a Town Councillor since 2000 when he won the seat at a by-election. Since then he has taken a very active role in Council life including being chair of the Planning and Development Committee. John has also been vice chair of the Town Hall Committee as well at taking an active part in other aspects of the Council’s activities. John is also deeply involved in the events of the town run by the Town Council, in particular those around Christmas.
John was Chairman of the Governors at Ardwyn School for 10 year between 2001 and 2011. He also regularly calls the bingo at Middletown Village Hall each Monday night.
John was born in Middletown and has working in Welshpool since leaving school at the age of 15. John became an apprentice joiner and remained with DT Jones until 1970 when he took up a managerial position at Boys and Boden. John retired in 2001. John also spent 2 years doing National Service reaching the rank of Corporal in the RAF.
John married Joan 53 years ago and they look as happy today as the day they were married. They have 2 daughters and 6 grand children.
John’s chosen charities this year are the Stroke Club Welshpool and an Epilepsy Charity. Both for personal reasons.
The Mayor will be a central part of the parade to be held on Mayors Sunday 3rd June as part of the Jubilee celebrations. The parade leaves at 10.40am the Town Hall area and follows the one way system to St Mary’s Church lead by a new youth band from Newtown.
The parade returns to the Town Hall marshalling up by the Inglenook and then going into Church Street, Broad Street and back to the Town Hall.
Following the service the parade and Welshpool residents are invited to join the Mayor in the Assembly Room of the Town Hall for a drink and nibbles. There will also be the presentation of the Community Awards for 2012 and a special award in this Jubilee year.
