The procession headed to the Town Hall with crowds applauding the veterans as they passed. At the Town Hall there was a siren, a minutes silence, a prayer by Rev Roger Brown and the bells of St Marys before the band lead the parade with a salute to the veterans. On arrival at the back of the Town Hall the procession dismissed. There was then a tremendous spread in excellent surroundings in the market for all with a special VJ Day cake cut by John Gwilt of the RBL. MAYORAL ELECTIONS TO CHANGE
Welshpool is to break a 40 year old tradition by naming the town's new mayor in May rather than January after councillor's held a secret vote. Since 1974 pre-nominations have taken place in January with the decision rubber stamped at the Town Council annual meeting in May - traditionally followed by a Mayor's reception. The council'a finance, strategy and monitoring committee this week recommended that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections take place at the May annual meeting and councillors voted 9-6 in favour of the change. Councillors Phil Pritchard and David Senior both said the recommendation was to help avoid an embarrassing situation for the council and prospective Mayor when councillors voted differently to expected and elected someone else. Councillors Shane Squibb and Anne Holloway both said the current system worked and urged members to maintain traditions.

Welshpool Town Council has actively risen to the challenge and is working closely with the council to aid not only the savings needed but the protection of services. For many older people, a visit to the local day centre is also a place to make social connections and meet other members of the community. Town Mayor Cllr Malcolm Douglas added; “Welshpool Town Council is pleased we have reached agreement and can take forward the protection of another important service for the Town'. Councillor Darren Mayor, Cabinet Member for Adult Services said; “Welshpool Town Council have actively engaged with the council in securing a future for the Westwood Day centre, and over the coming months will develop a strategy to provide services from 2015 onwards. “This is a fantastic opportunity to ensure older people continue to have support, and a place to meet in the community.
